I just read a post on the Desiring God blog about a new book by John Piper, to be released in January. As I now write, my heart moves faster due to the adrenaline being released into my system. To say the least, I am excited about this new book.
I just recently procured Apostasy from the Gospel, by John Owen, which deals with a similar subject.
This is a topic we need to take special heed to, especially as reformed Christians. There are many who have misconstrued the doctrines of grace, giving false security to those who are yet unregenerate. The self-deceived are in our rank, and we do well to take heed and examine ourselves, lest we are to be found in their number on that great and terrible day.
On Thursday Dr. Ray Lubeck (in my last day of his class as an undergraduate student) reminded us that God has proven Himself to be in the habit of saving a remnant after his own heart. All of Israel thought they were of the chosen status despite the prophets’ warning that all of Israel was not God’s Israel. Today we are in a similar predicament in Christendom. The words of Jesus in Matthew 7:19-23 should echo in our ears and cause our hearts to tremble. Jesus tells us:
There are those who claim that I am their master who will end up in hell because they don’t do what my Father wants them to. Some of them are even in ministry as christian counselors, preaching pastors and evangelists, and they are recognized for doing great ‘christian’ works. Yet, those people who I do not know and lived as though I gave them no law will not find rest in my presence. (paraphrased)
